The 54th Annual Grammy Awards are just around the corner and come February 12, The Book of Mormon’s leading men, Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, may be able to add “Grammy winner” to their ever-growing resumes. As previously reported, the Tony-winning musical scored a nomination for Best Musical Theater Cast Album, and for the first time, the Grammys are including "principal soloists" among those credited to the nomination.
“I never really saw this in the cards for myself,” Gad recently told Broadway.com of scoring a nod for music’s top honor. “My first reaction was ‘Woah, woah, woah…have they really heard my voice?'” he joked. “The [success of the] show has been one surprise after another and it never ceases to amaze me. It’s a huge thrill and this is probably the only chance I’ll have to win a Grammy…until I release my solo album of Justin Bieber covers.”
Rannells echoed Gad’s excitement saying, “We’re all very proud of the cast album, so it’s a nice honor to be nominated and to be included by name. It’s been a crazy year and it keeps getting crazier.”
Unfortunately due to their commitment to the blockbuster musical, including a performance on Grammy day, the duo will not be able to attend the Los Angeles awards ceremony. “I wish I could, it’s probably the only time I’ll ever be able to schmooze with Beyonce,” Gad said with a laugh. “I would love to meet Adele and whatever Lady Gaga goes as that night, whether she’s an egg, or a barmitzvah or a choo choo train. To even be included in this mix of people is crazy.”
The Book of Mormon is up against the cast albums for the current Broadway revivals of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Anything Goes. Also credited to the The Book of Mormon album nomination are composers/lyricists/producers Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez and producers Anne Garefino, Stephen Oremus and Scott Rudin.
Hosted by LL Cool J, the Grammy telecast will air live on CBS and feature performances from Stick Fly producer Alicia Keys, in additon to musicians like Taylor Swift, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Bruce Springsteen, Carrie Underwood, Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, Coldplay, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and more.
